Telomeres — the protective caps on chromosome ends — shorten with each cell division, and their length is a biomarker of biological aging. While no supplement reliably lengthens telomeres, specific nutrients and lifestyle factors protect against accelerated telomere shortening.
Telomeres are repetitive DNA sequences (TTAGGG in humans) at the ends of chromosomes that protect coding DNA from degradation during replication. Each cell division shortens telomeres by 50-200 base pairs because DNA polymerase can't fully replicate chromosome ends. When telomeres reach a critical length (the Hayflick limit), the cell enters senescence or apoptosis. Telomerase — the enzyme that rebuilds telomeres — is active in stem cells and cancer cells but largely inactive in somatic cells. Telomere length thus functions as a biological clock, and accelerated shortening is associated with earlier onset of age-related diseases.
Exercise: Endurance exercise is consistently associated with longer telomeres in epidemiological studies. A 2017 meta-analysis found that highly active individuals have telomere lengths equivalent to 9 years of reduced biological aging compared to sedentary counterparts. Omega-3: Higher blood EPA+DHA levels correlate with slower telomere shortening over time. The mechanism likely involves reduced oxidative stress and inflammation at the telomere level. Omega-3 Fish Oil. Antioxidants: Oxidative stress accelerates telomere shortening through guanine oxidation in the telomeric repeat sequence. Glutathione, vitamin C, and vitamin E protect against this. L-Glutathione, GlyNAC+. Stress management: Chronic psychological stress is associated with telomere shortening equivalent to 10+ years of additional aging. Cortisol increases oxidative damage to telomeres and downregulates telomerase activity.

Can supplements lengthen my telomeres?
No supplement has been reliably shown to lengthen telomeres in human clinical trials. What specific nutrients can do is slow the rate of telomere shortening — protecting against accelerated aging while the natural shortening clock continues at its normal pace.
Should I test my telomere length?
Commercial telomere tests exist but have significant variability between measurements. A single test provides limited useful information. Serial testing over years may show trends, but the actionable takeaway is the same regardless of result: exercise, manage stress, eat well, sleep well, and maintain nutritional sufficiency.
