If you are looking for a supplement to support glutathione production, you have probably come across both NAC and GlyNAC.
The names sound similar, and there is a good reason for that. GlyNAC contains NAC. The difference is that GlyNAC combines N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) with glycine, providing two of the three amino acids your body uses to make glutathione.
So is GlyNAC better than NAC? Not necessarily for everyone.
NAC is a well-studied supplement with decades of research behind it. GlyNAC is a newer approach that supplies both cysteine and glycine, and emerging research suggests the combination may be particularly interesting for supporting glutathione production and healthy aging.

N-acetyl cysteine, commonly called NAC, is a supplemental form of the amino acid cysteine.
NAC has been used for decades and has an extensive history in both medicine and nutritional research. One of its most important roles is its ability to provide the body with cysteine, which can then be used to produce glutathione.
Glutathione is an antioxidant made naturally inside your cells from three amino acids:
Cysteine
Glycine
Glutamate
Of these ingredients, cysteine has traditionally received much of the attention because its availability can limit glutathione synthesis in certain circumstances. NAC is a useful way to provide cysteine, which is one reason it has become such a popular supplement for glutathione support.

This makes NAC a perfectly reasonable option for someone primarily interested in providing additional cysteine to support normal glutathione production.
But cysteine is not the only ingredient required to make glutathione.
That is where GlyNAC comes in.
GlyNAC is simply the combination of glycine and NAC.
The name comes from:
GLYcine + NAC
Rather than supplying cysteine alone, GlyNAC provides the body with both glycine and cysteine.
Your body then has two of the three raw materials required to synthesize glutathione.
The third, glutamate, is generally abundant in the body and is typically less of a concern from a nutritional standpoint.
This distinction became particularly interesting when researchers began studying why glutathione production may decline with age.
Research in older adults has suggested that inadequate availability of both glycine and cysteine may contribute to reduced glutathione synthesis. This led researchers to investigate whether supplying the two nutrients together could help support glutathione status.

Your body cannot make glutathione from cysteine alone.
Glutathione synthesis happens through a series of steps. First, cysteine combines with glutamate. Glycine is then added to complete the glutathione molecule.
Think of glutathione like a three-piece puzzle:
Glutamate + Cysteine + Glycine = Glutathione
NAC helps supply the cysteine piece.
GlyNAC supplies both the cysteine and glycine pieces.
For many people, dietary glycine may be adequate. However, research has raised the possibility that glycine availability can become limiting under certain circumstances, particularly with aging or increased metabolic demand.

This is where GlyNAC gets interesting.
Several human studies have examined supplementation with glycine and NAC together.
In one randomized, placebo-controlled trial, researchers studied older adults for 16 weeks. GlyNAC supplementation was associated with improvements in glutathione status and several markers related to oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, inflammation, and physical function compared with placebo.
Another randomized controlled trial tested several different amounts of GlyNAC and observed dose-related effects on glutathione-related outcomes, although baseline oxidative stress and glutathione status appeared to influence how strongly participants responded.
These studies are encouraging, but there is an important caveat.
Much of the notable GlyNAC research has been conducted in older adults, sometimes in relatively small study populations. We should not automatically assume that every healthy younger person will receive the same benefits.
That makes biological sense. If glutathione synthesis is already functioning well, providing additional precursors may have less noticeable impact.

There is not currently strong evidence from large head-to-head clinical trials showing that GlyNAC is universally "better" than NAC alone.
That's an important distinction.
We know a great deal about NAC individually. We also have promising clinical research studying glycine and NAC together. But the major GlyNAC trials generally compare GlyNAC with placebo, not GlyNAC directly against an equivalent dose of NAC alone.
So rather than saying one is objectively better, it makes more sense to look at what each supplement provides.
You specifically want supplemental NAC
Your primary goal is providing cysteine for glutathione production
You already consume plenty of glycine through your diet or other supplements
You want a simple, single-ingredient supplement
You are using NAC for one of its other established nutritional applications
You want to provide both glycine and cysteine
You are specifically interested in the emerging GlyNAC research
Healthy aging and cellular antioxidant support are priorities
You prefer getting glycine and NAC together in one formula
You want a more comprehensive precursor approach to glutathione production
Neither approach replaces good nutrition, adequate protein intake, exercise, sleep, or other foundational health habits.
If glutathione support is your primary goal, both NAC and GlyNAC have a logical role.
NAC provides cysteine, which is a crucial substrate for glutathione synthesis and has been studied extensively for this purpose.
GlyNAC takes that concept one step further by providing cysteine plus glycine.
This may become more relevant when glycine availability is also limiting glutathione production.
For someone with adequate glycine status, NAC alone may provide what is needed.
For someone interested in supplying both major precursor nutrients at the same time, GlyNAC offers a straightforward way to do so.

Although the combination is best known for supporting glutathione synthesis, both nutrients have roles beyond simply serving as glutathione precursors.

Neurotransmitter signaling
Creatine production
Normal metabolic function
Glutathione synthesis
NAC provides cysteine and has been studied for:
Supporting glutathione production
Antioxidant defenses
Maintaining normal mucus viscosity and respiratory health
Cellular redox balance
Putting the two together gives the body two nutritionally important amino acids while simultaneously supplying key substrates required for glutathione synthesis.
That dual approach is what makes GlyNAC distinct from simply taking NAC by itself.
Yes.
There is nothing inherently unique about putting glycine and NAC into the same capsule.
You could take an individual glycine supplement alongside an individual NAC supplement and still be taking the two components that make up GlyNAC.
The advantage of a combined GlyNAC product is primarily convenience and dosing consistency.
Instead of purchasing two products and calculating the amounts yourself, a GlyNAC formula can provide predetermined amounts of each ingredient in one serving.
This is where things get more complicated.
GlyNAC studies have used a fairly wide range of doses.
Some research used relatively high, body-weight-based doses. Other randomized research has examined lower total daily amounts of GlyNAC using equal amounts of glycine and NAC.
Those research protocols should not automatically be interpreted as universal daily recommendations.
The appropriate amount can depend on the individual, formulation, diet, age, health status, and reason for supplementation.

If you decide to use GlyNAC instead of NAC alone, look beyond the words "GlyNAC" on the front of the bottle.
A quality formula should tell you exactly how much of each ingredient you are getting.
Check the Supplement Facts panel for the actual amounts of glycine and NAC rather than judging a formula by the name on the front of the bottle.
You should be able to see the individual amount of both glycine and NAC rather than a proprietary blend.
Look for manufacturers with strong ingredient identity and purity testing.
Supplements should be produced under robust quality-control procedures with testing for identity, purity, and contaminants.
